In 79 AD when life in Pompeii and Herculaneum came to an abrupt halt and was stopped in the middle of its everyday activities.
It is incredible how one of the greatest disasters of the human history was turned into the greatest archeological luck of the history! Herculaneum was submerged by a river of volcanic mud which, solidifying, determined an absolutely original and unparalleled conservation phenomenon compared to Pompeii. The guided tour of Herculaneum lasts approximately two hours and includes the beautiful exhibition “Splendours of Herculaneum” inside the Antiquarium, as well as a visit to the “boat pavilion” where the wooden remains of the boat were found in 1980 near the Ancient marina together with the skeletons. From Herculaneum in about 10 minutes on foot and 20 minutes by train you reach Pompeii, the largest and most evocative archaeological center in Italy, a rich merchant town of the Roman imperial era, also marked from the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which wiped out all forms of life and covered the vast area with a thick blanket of ashes and pumice stones.
